To ease the overwhelming choices of Pacific Northwest evergreens here are a few ideas to pique your interest. Broadleaf evergreens are trees such as Madrone or Southern Magnolia that keep their leaves year round but dont have needles. Grow it in full sun or part shade in moist but well-drained soil.

Although we are talking about plants that are ideal for small spaces these plants will work great in larger gardens too. Scattered from northern California into Oregon Idaho Washington and Canada. Little Gem grows in a narrower form and taller to about 20 feet while Baby Grand has a more oval crown and grows to about 12 feet.

Compact holly shrub Ilex A dwarf thorny evergreen shrub with berries. It is a low growing tree that makes it suitable for landscaping in very small yards as a border or ornamental plant. They are worth of every inch of the small space they occupy.

These trees are rather short compared to other evergreens measuring 40 to 60 feet max. Although this is an evergreen tree it is perhaps most loved for its abundant and fragrant white flowers in spring. Pacific wax myrtle is a handsome and hardy hedging plant thats native to our region.

As such it performs well in Northwest gardens creating excellent dense hedges and windbreaks. Either one gives welcomed glossy greenery during winter. Some say the twigs covered in needles give them the look of a dogs tail.

The plants on this list meet the following criteria. Nurseries carry a few thoroughly proven kinds especially the evergreen magnolia Magnolia grandiflora Fraser photinia Photinia x fraseri and English holly Ilex aquifolium but hesitate to stock other little-known plants. This shrub can grow up to 30 feet tall and 10 to 20 feet wide so give it some room in your garden or regular maintenance to keep it smaller.
